Monsoon Flooding in Tucson: What to Do in the First 24 Hours

Safety comes before cleanup

Before touching anything, check the basics: is the water anywhere near an electrical outlet, panel, or appliance that's still powered? If there's any doubt, shut off power to the affected area at the breaker — not by standing in water to reach a switch. If floodwater entered from the street or a sewage backup is involved, treat it as contaminated (Category 2 or 3) and keep kids and pets out of the area entirely until it's been assessed.

Hour 1–2: Stop the source, document everything

1. Stop what you can control. If it's a plumbing failure rather than storm runoff, shut off the water at the main. Storm flooding you can't stop — focus on the next step instead.
2. Photograph and video before you move anything. Wide shots of every affected room, then close-ups of damaged flooring, furniture, walls, and any visible water line on the wall. This documentation is what your insurance adjuster and your restoration crew both need.
3. Call for help. The faster a crew starts extraction, the less gets ruined. Response time is the single biggest factor in how much a job ends up costing.

Hour 2–6: Move what you can, safely

If it's safe to do so, move furniture legs onto foil or wood blocks, pull rugs off wet flooring, and get anything sentimental or irreplaceable (photos, documents, electronics) up and out of the water. Don't use a household shop vac on standing water mixed with electrical risk, and don't run a household fan on visibly contaminated water — that just spreads contamination through the air.

Clean water vs. contaminated water changes everything

Monsoon runoff that entered from the yard, street, or a roof leak during the storm is different from a sewage backup. Rising floodwater and storm runoff are usually treated as contaminated once they've touched the ground outside — which affects what can be saved versus what has to be discarded. Hour 6–24: Get drying started, don't wait it out

The 24–48 hour window matters because that's roughly how long it takes clean water sitting on porous material to become a mold risk. Waiting a few days to "see if it dries on its own" is the single most common mistake that turns a manageable dry-out into a much bigger remediation job. Professional extraction and monitored drying equipment removes moisture from inside walls and under flooring that a box fan simply can't reach.
